Energy efficiency in data centers is when less energy is used to carry out the same task or produce the same result. In data centers, this is done by using less energy to cool and run the servers, while still producing quality results.

What is a data center?

Data centers are a facility with servers that are connected internally and externally by communication and networking equipment. It is composed of data storage systems, networked computers, and computer infrastructure that is used to put together processes and dismantle large quantities of data. Many businesses rely on these services, applications, and data containments that data centers provide, as they are vital for daily operations.

Why do we need to make data centers energy efficient?

Usually, data centers use large amounts of energy, as they support things such as; internet services, social media, and businesses. With the continuous digital transformation growth, there is a high demand for more data centers that are energy efficient to minimize the environmental impact.

How is it measured?

Data centers measure energy efficiency by using the Power Use Effectiveness (PUE) gauge. It indicates the amount of energy that is being used in the data center and the number of processors it requires to run.

How can we make data centers more energy efficient?

There are many infrastructure components in data centers that use electricity, which gives plenty of opportunities to increase energy efficiency, whether it be installing HVAC´s or smaller changes like adjusting fan speeds. Together all the changes big and small reduce the consumption of power.

Blanking-Panel

How does Consultimer make an energy efficient data center?

There are two different types of Blanking panels that are used by Consultimer. The first blanking panel (size 1RU) is used inside of the server racks. Its purpose is to fill empty spots in the server racks, separating the hot and cold airflow.  When the spot is needed to fill with equipment, the blanking panel can be easily removed and reused when needed. The second type of blanking panel is Hot Aisle Containment (HAC) and Cold Aisle Containment (CAC) which are used in the data center aisles, Consultimer uses different sizes of these from 48RU-52RU. These blanking panels go in the aisles where there are no server racks for the same purpose of separating air. Another item that Consultimer uses that helps with energy efficiency is PDU cable sealing. It is a piece of material that goes around cables to fill in any gaps. By using this it stops the cold or hot air flow from coming in or out. By using these materials, you´re able to save up to 75% of the refrigeration cost.

Why is it so important and energy efficient to stop air mixing in data centers?

The equipment in data centers have hot exhausts and by not having things such as blanking panels and PDU cable sealings, the air will recirculate back through the server racks. As a result, the fans in the servers compensate for the higher temperatures and will speed up. This then results in more power consumption.

Why choose Consultimer to help you create a more energy efficient data center?

Consultimer has over 20 years of experience in mission-critical and hyper-scale data centers. This experience has helped them create customized solutions and parts to stop airflow, therefore creating more energy-efficient data centers. Consultimer is constantly taking steps to minimize any impact on nature that they may cause. Also, their expert team can install a blanking panel in as little as five seconds, allowing companies to get optimized data centers in a matter of hours.
